"Yes, We Créu"
Créu gained international prominence on October 2nd, 2009, when Rio de Janeiro was chosen by the International Olympic Committee to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Brazilian users of microblogging platform Twitter, when celebrating, wrote repeatedly (and, apparently, with no single source) the phrase "Yes, we créu", as a parody of Barack Obama‘s slogan in the presidential campaign of 2008, Yes, we can. It also referenced a speech by Luís Inácio Lula da Silva the day before, when stating that South America
was able to host the Games for the first time, and so they could repeat
Obama’s catchphrase. The joke made #1 to the trending topics of Twitter for several hours.
The first recorded tweet with the sentence was posted by user @Sovietska at 1:57 PM (seven minutes after the IOC announcement) and then retweeted by Marcelo Tas, who is himself a media personality in Brazil and is followed by more than 370,000 users.
